Monson shows improvement at County Championships

Over sixty RTW Monson swimmers have attended the first of three of four weekends for this year’s Kent County Championships at the Crystal Palace Swim Centre.

Previous year’s winners including Annabel Guye-Johnson, Jemimah Berkley, Andre Strydom. Thomas Leman, Mia Burns, Hannah Lambert, Kody Bradbury and Maddie Burton continued their form and were joined by newcomers Rose Compton and Frankie Whiting in winning many medals and titles. But it was the depth and younger element that impressed Head Coach Graham Bassi.

“One of our training targets for the winter was to improve the aerobic capacity in all our athletes. It was very encouraging to see our progress in this arear. More encouraging was the fact our swimmers swam well to their race plans and that skill levels showed remarkable improvement. The club has a history of being strong in the shorter events but now I believe we can challenge in all categories. I was particularly impressed with our youngsters who raced with maturity and great attitude.”

Winning medals for the first time included Alice Dobson, Holly Chapman, Jessica Gable and nine-year-old Aran Bissett.

“As a club, I know our areas of weakness and they will take time to address. But in five months I have witnessed a change. Swimmers are now working with a process and an understanding of what is required for long-term development. With the start of our new programme in March, I am confident that we can start to challenge our local rivals. The new programme delivers more hours, a new strength and conditioning programme and an increase in staff. This is an exciting time to be involved with a club that has a forward-thinking committee and now a full professional team of coaching staff.”

Next weekend sees the last round of events in the shorter events, but also coincides with a group of thirteen swimmers attending an outdoor training camp in Cyprus.

Coach Bassi said, ”It has been a long winter and our athletes need to train long course and outdoors. What better place to take them than Cyprus? This camp will give us a massive advantage for attending next month’s British Championships in Edinburgh. Our thanks go to everyone that has made this possible.”

RTW Monson is always looking for young athletes who have the desire to pursue their dreams in the pool. If you are interested in joining a high-performance team, or want to check out our ‘learn to swim’ programme, please contact us via our website: www.rtwmonson.org
